Bob Jenyns The Art of the Traveller. 5th Oct – 14th Nov 2018.

Exhibition opening Friday 5th October, 6 – 8 pm. Opening remarks, Margaret Rich O.A.M

This exhibition is the first retrospective of artworks by Australian artist Bob Jenyns (1944-2015) and includes lithographs, sculptures, screen prints, woodcuts, oil on canvas and oil pastel on paper. Born Robert Jenyns, in Victoria, Jenyns was a prolific artist whose practice spanned over four decades, in which he produced a large body of work that included sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings. Jenyns is represented in many of the country’s largest collections, including: the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Queensland Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. His work is distinctive in style and demonstrate his witty sense of humour and passion for art. As central figures in the Australian art world exhibiting regularly in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney, Bob and his wife Lorraine Jenyns (a ceramic artist of equal standing) were a dynamic creative force, working, teaching and producing art which has been enthusiastically embraced by Galleries, Museums and the public throughout their long careers. We feel extremely privileged to have been selected by his wife to exhibit these artworks that are as fresh and relevant today, as the day Bob Jenyns created them. He participated in many of Australia’s most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978  Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the second Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l’archeveche. One of the striking characteristics of Bob Jenyns’ art is the feeling of youthfulness, modernity and humour that it conveys. Such is this quality, that prints and sculptures created decades ago still have a freshness and contemporary relevance that suggests that they could have been created yesterday. We feel extremely privileged to have been selected by his wife Lorraine to exhibit this wonderful work.
